Version 0
: Plasma 2
The environment construction kit
The talk will cover the differences between the current Plasma Workspace shipped in the 4.x series with the new system based on Qt5 and KDE Frameworks 5.
The talk will go from the architecture of the Plasma Framework to how a shell is built and what will change in the Plasma Desktop and Plasma Active projects.
The introduction of QtQuick 2 alongside Qt5 represents a challenge and an opportunity for the KDE Plasma Workspaces.
The technology which the Plasma Workspaces are based upon, the Plasma framework has been reworked to be more lightweight and has been ported away the old QGraphicsView framework, while the Workspace is now completely based on QML2 and scene graph, guaranteeing faster graphics and a smoother user experience while significantly lowering the contribution barrier for the developer.
The talk will cover the changes in the Plasma library, how to use it from any application, and how a single workspace will now be used for all formfactors, such as Plasma Desktop, Netbook and Active.
The talk will also cover the mechanism Plasma uses to adapt the user interface do different form factors and how to write a plasmoid that looks and works in a different way on the different formfactors offered by Plasma Desktop and Plasma Active.
And last, the talk will cover what will change for the final user and how we are planning to keep the impact on the final experience minimum, even with a deep technology change and redesign at the core.
