Version 1

Technicaltalk: Next Gen Desktop Applications

Event_large

Why are people in the Desktop switching to the Web while in other
form factors like Tablets, Phablets and Smartphones exactly the contrary
is happening? Is the Web a better technology for the Desktop?
What is the state of our Desktop applications? Are they up to todays
needs? How would the Desktop apps of the future look like?

In this talk I will try to give answer to all those questions, by
explaining ramblings, statistics and showing what I believe will be
the first next gen app at least by KDE.

The usage of native apps in the Desktop is shrinking and the pase does
not seem to slow down. A big amount of users have enough with a browser as
it is shown by some products like chromebooks. This situation contrast
with what is happening on other form factors (phones and tablets) where
native apps are king. What's wrong with the Desktop apps then?

During the first part of the talk I will talk about technologies, about
Web vs Native. Then we will move on to what I believe is the key on
succeding writting an application these days. Once my theory is explained
to the audience I will use three current applications as examples, showing
what they are doing correct and what they are doing wrong.

Finally, I will show a new Desktop App Vishesh Handa and I have been
working on that will showcase what we believe are the Next Gen Desktop Apps.
